WTA’s Emergency Quarantine Facilities (EQFs) Shortlisted at WAFX 2021

July 31, 2021May 22, 2022

WTA's Back to back recognition at the World Architecture Festival 2021

Manila, Philippines, July 31, 2021 – WTA Architecture and Design Studio is proud to announce that its the Emergency Quarantine Facilities (EQF) Project was shortlisted in the Completed Projects – Health Category.

The Emergency Quarantine Facilities (EQF) Project, a brainchild born out of ideas of ephemerality and impermanence, is a temporary structure aimed at augmenting the capacity of our hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown. Strategically planned to limit cross-contamination, patients and healthcare workers have designated entries and airflow is directed downwind from front to rear to prevent recirculation. The facility can be lengthened or shortened depending on need and can likewise be aggregated in modules to accommodate many more patients. The facility embodied speed, scalability and simplicity in its structure.

Prescient and purposeful, the pavilion consisted of an adaptable wall system that can transform into short-term relief spaces we might require in times of increasing uncertainty. Built with familiar and readily-available materials, the EQF is easily replicable and scalable not only in Metro Manila but throughout the country as well. William Ti, Jr. champions democracy in design, providing an open source link for the EQFs drawings in the hopes that communities take up the same agency and quick mobility that has been displayed since the conception of this project. After four months of actively building EQFs, WTA Architecture and Design Studio, together with its partners, friends and fellow advocates, accomplished 75 facilities across Mega Manila.

World Architecture Festival is the world’s largest international architectural event. It includes the biggest architectural awards programme in the world, dedicated to celebrating excellence via live presentations to delegates and international juries. In 2021, twelve big-picture architectural initiatives addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges have won the first of this year’s WAF Awards. The WAFX Award winners are all selected from entries to the Future Projects category in the WAF Awards Programme, for their ambition and scope.

WTA’s Horizon Manila Project Wins WAFX 2021 Award

WTA's Back to back recognition at the World Architecture Festival 2021

Manila, Philippines, July 24, 2021 – WTA Architecture and Design Studio is proud to announce that the firm’s project – Horizon Manila – is a final winner in the Water Category and has been shortlisted for the Future Projects – Masterplanning Category at the World Architecture Festival 2021.

Horizon Manila is a 419-hectare reclamation project that is currently the largest reclamation project in the City of Manila. The project is meant to serve as a new hub for growth and development for one of the densest and largest mega cities of the 21st century. Its concept – the Manileño – presents a bottom-up community-centric organic growth model in contrast with the archetypal command-driven top-down master plan. It centers on creating shared experiences and building distinct community identities by establishing soft boundaries and edges.

This masterplan is composed of 3 islands bisected by a 4 km long canal park that recalls the identity of the Tagalog (River) people who settled along the mouth of the Pasig River. It focuses on people and local activities as the main determinant for diverse and organic growth. The goal is to grow 28 unique communities or barangays along the water’s edge. Each of the 28 communities will have its own development guidelines and will promote mixed-use development in each locality. Barrier-free developments with complete accessibility for all, such as open spaces and parks, will be obligatory and urban infrastructure promoting social connectivity will be the defining framework for the city. Shared experiences that tie the communities together are developed through activated public spaces with programs that strengthen the vitality of the streetscape. Placemaking features that stimulate local experiences define these spaces. They range from the ubiquitous streetball culture of Manila to lush tropical gardens, from water gardens to civic and religious plazas. Each place is a kernel of ground activity that evokes the culture and lifestyle of Manileños.

Principal architect William Ti, Jr. presented the Horizon Manila Project during the WAF Futures online event last July 14, 2021. You may view his presentation by accessing the Day 3 World Architecture Festival Live Stream.

William Ti On Building Legacy Not Just Beautiful Architecture

July 2, 2021August 10, 2021

City Perspective with East Grid Master Plan

Architect William Ti shares his vision and his ultimate goal as an architect. He goes on and stresses that “if you really want a better life in your city, then I think you need to be part of [the] change.”

William Ti Jr. began practicing architecture after getting his license way back in 2003 and he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from the University of Santo Tomas in 2002. In 2007, he started WTA Architecture and Design Studio, as Principal Architect, and then moved on to take up his master’s degree in Urban Design from the National University of Singapore in 2012.

William Ti_BluPrint_WTA Architeacture and Design Studio

Growing up in Manila, he has learned to enjoy being immersed in a community and how to bring more empathy to the general public. His childhood experiences have led him to create architecture that will help change society and make the city better.

“I wish I would leave my city behind better than what I’ve found it. I want to effect great change in our society. I think being an architect empowers us and allows us to actually do things, that can impact so much of our society.” – Ar. William Ti

On Being Socially Relevant

Beginning with experimental projects to the ones that have more social impact and to being able to engage in a broader community gave birth to the success and what WTA has now become. The company has been continuously working on a social architecture that tries to create more socially engaging spaces, building hyperlocal communities that are barrier-free, and trying to rebuild our communities.

One of their projects that is worth mentioning is the Twelve Luxury Flats project in San Juan City. Being the first residential development project of WTA, Ar. William designed it on the foundation of his hopes and vision for the metro by addressing the disconnection of residential properties and doing the density of the city right. The project explores how residences can be reconnected to their community despite the prevailing density and limited space for distribution. The project also won Asia Pacific Property Award for Architecture in Multiple Residence Philippine Category for 2021 – 2022.

Another project by WTA focused on social architecture, is the master planning of the Horizon Manila: Manileño project, which is a reclamation project in Manila Bay. The project envisions building 28 distinct communities that target to integrate the needs of the social and cultural heritage of Manila while promoting a sustainable lifestyle. Next in line is the FEM Stadium, or the so-called “Stadium of the North” in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. It is a renovation project of rebuilding the Mariano Marcos Stadium. The project pursues opening the stadium to the nearby developments, like the park, connecting the spaces through green areas that encourage walkability and sustainability. Also, the project will not only house sporting events but will become the region’s primary venue for large events.

Horizon Manila will reinforce the personal mobility of its residents by providing 5 to 8 meter-wide arcaded sidewalks throughout the 3 islands. Urban clusters also provide shaded oases that create human scale interest points with 5-minute walking distance. Dedicated pedestrian lanes with exclusive cycling, and pedestrian bridges ensure continuous travel throughout the city.
The proposed sloping landscape that connects the Rizal Park to the stadium and the adjacent neighborhood.

On Giving More Through Media

On continuing his pursuit of giving back to the city and society, Ar. William also thrives in the media industry. Leading the editorial team of BluPrint’s Volume 1 2021 Issue, he has initiated further discussions and pulling ideas as the nation moves forward to in the search for a better understanding of the built environment that is essential for the country’s greater development.

BP: BluPrint’s latest issue focuses on finding space within density for an urban lifestyle that is sustainable. As an architect, how do you think our country will be able to achieve this lifestyle?

WT: When we talk about density in the Philippines, we always talk about population. The number of people who live in Metro Manila and how incredibly dense it is. And how little space we have for everyone here. We have the density of built-up space, how we can have enough space to accommodate everyone. It is up to us to figure out a way on how to build a megacity for tomorrow, on how we can work on the densities we have, on how we can find more space for people, and how we can build a more sustainable and enjoyable lifestyle for everyone.

BP: As we are now, do you have a guess as to how long it would take until the country would be able to flaunt and sustain such a lifestyle?

WT: I think in terms of like, where the Philippines is now in terms of development, we’re still a developing country and everyone is looking after their immediate needs, for we’re trying to figure out what we want as a society in moving forward. I think we also have to remember that the built environment, architecture, and all that comes with it, play a very important role in terms of nation-building. We need to inspire people. We need to find common ground and allow public space especially for people who are more vulnerable communities, those who don’t have access to better private facilities.

Anthology Festival 2021: Nature, Building, and City for “Our City

March 26, 2021March 30, 2021 Archinesia

Anthology Festival 2021 - Anthology Talks Maison H

Anthology Festival, an annual architectural festival held by WTA Design & Studio on March 19-21, 2021. Different from previous years and adjusting to the current pandemic conditions, the Anthology Festival 2021 is transformed into a virtual event with free online accessibility through the Anthology Festival’s official Facebook page.

However, this virtual event’s concept still attracted every session that was held. The 6th Anthology Festival with the theme “Our City” brings several practitioners of architecture, city development, art, and education. The talks and discussions in this event became more diverse and came from many points of view. Even the panelists and speakers involved are from various countries in the world. From the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, to China..

Starting with some young architects on the first day, the Anthology Festival presents Benjee Mendoza (BAAD Studio) on the Scale Model Tour. Then, other young architects were also present at the Shelter Dialogues session. They discussed trends and social media among young architects. Then, the first day of the festival was closed with Anthology Talks with Martijn de Geus and Han Zhang (Maison H), as well as the announcement of the winner of the “Revamp: Our Jeep” competition.

The second day was also interesting. This time, it opened with the Scale Model Tour with Cathy Saldana (PDP Architects). In contrast to the previous day, the festival on March 20, 2021, consisted of two Anthology Sessions. First session with Jason Buensalido (Buensalido Architects) who shared how models help them in studying fluidity building designs. Then it was followed by the presence of lecturers from various countries who talked about the teaching process during the pandemic. Various panelists also attended the Shelter Dialogue. Here they believe that one of the things that make up a city is the people in it.

The Index Project launches the ‘Design to Improve Life’ virtual workshop in partnership with the Design Center of the Philippines, last December 3-4 2020. Facilitated by Education Director Charlotte Høeg Andersen of The Index Project, the workshop introduces the Design to Improve Life Compass as a tool for creative problem-solving.

Participants where made to group themselves into 3 person teams to solve a challenge prompt. WTA Architecture and Design Studio was represented by Senior Manager Arvin Pangilinan, who was grouped with Heidrun Milan of Heidrun Milan Design Studio, and Pia Ocampo of ReMaker Space. Their challenge focused on how to bridge the gap between architects, designers and educators with the local community. the challenge is to inspire better spaces for more local communities in terms of making cities and settlements inclusive, resilient and sustainable.

With using the compass as a framework, the team devised the Design Dialogue Kit ( D2 Kit) to inspire design solutions that responds to the needs of local communities. The kit acts as equipment for designers to spark continuous dialouge with the community thoughout the design process.

MANILA – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Wednesday honored its civilian partner who helped construct several emergency quarantine facilities (EQFs) in military and civilian health institutions in Mega Manila.

AFP Chief of Staff, Gen. Gilbert Gapay, presented a plaque of appreciation to William Tan Ti Jr., principal architect of WTA Architecture and Design Studio, in a short ceremony in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

The WTA Architecture and Design Studio was the lead company that designed and initiated the construction of EQFs in military and government health institutions.

Through its cooperation with the AFP’s engineering units, led by AFP chief engineer Maj. Gen. William Ilagan, they were able to complete and construct 75 EQFs.

Gapay thanked Ti for his efforts and for initiating a partnership with the AFP.

Ti’s efforts, he said, exemplified the “Bayanihan Spirit” and the positive outcome of public-private partnerships, especially during this trying time in the country.
