City of Tomorrow: Our journey through architecture

December 12, 2020December 17, 2020 William Ti, Jr. | Philippine Daily Inquirer

The Book Stop Project located in Plaza Roma, Intramuros is a pop up library

What is your architecture story? Before you start on your journey as an architect, before you can truly find the passion and depth that you will need to constantly strive for, you must find your own story.

My own story starts with toys and building bases and houses for action figures back in the ’80s. As a young boy, I enjoyed setting up the scene and story for my collection of toys the most. Web crawling superhero Spiderman also left a strong imprint in me—with that dynamic sense of movement and varying views as he swings through Manhattan. I then started to take a more serious interest in drawing and sketching, which taught me to appreciate the importance and beauty of scale and proportion.

Books and traveling were a major influence as well. As a whole, I’ve read and traveled extensively, allowing me to imagine different worlds, to look at things from an outsider’s point of view, and to compare the way things worked in an Asian city, a European city, or even a magical elven city. Reading has thoroughly opened my mind.

Lessons learned

I’d like to share with you a story that has come to define the architecture that we practice. When I took my Master’s Degree in Singapore, WTA was already a growing young firm with bright hopes. I had to then fly back and forth between Singapore and Manila almost every week. This allowed me to see the contrasts between Manila and Singapore, the strengths and weaknesses of each city as I traveled back and forth and observed their architectural dynamics.

Singapore is a much more structured and heavily governed city than Manila. The length and breadth of how government there works hand in hand with architects is proof of how architecture matters in the growth and development of its society. It opened my eyes on how there are some things that should and can only be done by institutions and, given the proper channels, how much architecture can do for a country.

Emergency Quarantine Facility (EQF) on Design Creed TV

April 15, 2020December 18, 2020 Design Creed Asia

It’s episode 2 of “Design Creed Asia TV” This week we head to Manila, Philippines and speak to William Ti from WTA Architects.
William partnered with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and UAP Manila Metro Chapter to help develop and build emergency quarantine facilities in 65 sites!

His story touched us and we just had to interview him about his motivation behind this inspiring project!
“The idea behind the project was to be able to find a vital role for builders to help augment the capacity of our hospitals to flatten the curve of infection. The week of March 20 saw the hospitals here in Metro Manila start refusing patients one by one. On the 24th myself and a doctor friend, Dr. Glenn Angeles started discussing how we could help out. I was reminded of the pavilion we did last February for Anthology Festival and how it could be easily and quickly put up. We reached out to two friends from the military the next day Maj Carmelo Jaluague and Maj Banjo Badayos and quickly came home with a plan of action. We were raising money on the 26th. Delivering materials on the 27th. Started on the 28th. And finished the first facility on the 1st of April. ”

“Sustainable” Capitol, New Stadium-Park Soon to rise

February 2, 2020December 10, 2020 Blessing Angel V. Agliam | PGIN-CMO

ILOCOS NORTE – Adapting to the growing developmental needs of its people while safeguarding the province’s heritage, the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte unveiled the architectural plans of the “Big 3” infrastructure projects, particularly the “sustainable” Capitol building and new Ferdinand E. Marcos (FEM) Stadium,  last February 3.

One of the highlights of the 202nd founding anniversary celebration of the province is the commencement of the “2020 Ilocos Norte Development Masterplan,” and in-depth discussion of the “Big 3” infrastructure projects.

The “Big 3” are the Provincial Capitol expansion building, the Ferdinand E. Marcos Stadium rehabilitation, and the Dap-ayan Center redevelopment.

According to Architect Rex Hofilena, the new Capitol design is based on the “heritage-inspired new Ilocos Norte architecture.”

“The final design has to be anchored on heritage, Ilocano culture and tradition, and green architecture. The proposed Capitol now has an imposing dome at the center to symbolize authority,” Architect Hofilena pointed out in his presentation.

Meanwhile, Architect William Ti, the consulting architect of FEM stadium, designed the sports facility according to the social architecture approach.

“The stadium has to be something that people can go to. It has to be accessible to everyone. It has to be open. The stadium is not only for the athletes but it will also serve the whole province,” Architect Ti remarked.

The iconic structure is characterized by the connectivity of different facilities, vast space, simple structure, and distinct weaving design.

Moreover, the FEM stadium will be equipped with a “stadium-park,” and a training center.

“We will build a training center for the athletes. This will be in the south part. It will serve as a connection between the park and the stadium.

WTA wins Architectural Conceptual Design Contest for the Diliman Property

July 5, 2019May 7, 2020

The Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation (PSALM) launched a contest open to local and international architectural firms to come up with the best and most energy-efficient conceptual designs.
WTA Architecture and Design Studio was declared as the winning design for the Architectural Conceptual Design Contest for the Diliman Property on July 5, 2019.
The East Grid, the winning design, is a 5-hectare multidimensional masterplan for a holistic and sustainable workplace environment. It reflects the tropical and egalitarian aspects of the Filipino community. The development traces a strong narrative from the existing heritage structures that extends vertically and redefined the current urban skyline. The entire site acts as a connective tissue that brings together the varying aspects and needs of the community. It centers on strong social and pedestrian interactions as the core of a modern and thriving commercial district.

Supreme Court Complex

January 2, 2017May 22, 2022

The Supreme Court is one of the most important buildings in the Philippines. It is a singular project that has many facets that make it interesting, and it is the totality of these facets that make it such a great building. So for WTA Architecture and Design Studio’s design entry, the building needed to consider much thought. It was not just a symbolic piece of architecture, but a working institution.

We have used the idea of courts as the starting point for the Supreme Court Building. The various programs are arranged around and connected with a series of courtyards that serve as the primary organizing system. These courtyards allow us to create order and spaces to accommodate shifting numbers of people as well as shorten the distances and travel time between various divisions.

The site lies within a community fragmented by walls and boundaries which dominate the landscape. We have been able to use this separation to inform our design process and allow us to give something back to the community by creating connections and catalyzing the growth of the surrounding barangay.

The social aspect of our design works beyond our site and emphasizes sightlines, pedestrian connections, preserved green spaces, and public spaces that redefine the urban relationship between the surrounding communities. It is a public-friendly space for people to interact with. The Supreme Court has to be incredible. It has to offer something inspiring and be an aspirational pinnacle for the people in the spirit of supreme courts and institutions around the world that are typified by domes and pillars as symbols, not of raw power, but enlightened authority.

Symbolic elements have been streamlined yet traditioinal forms were retained. The domes allow us to present the idea of a very Filipino gentility that embraces justice tempered with wisdom and compassion. Domes have a much smaller surface exposure than a rectilinear structure and allow for greater passive cooling and thermal insulation as well as air penetration on site. By creating a series of linked domes that defines us not as an island nation but an archipelagic nation of connected islands sharing a common history, culture, and tradition, we are giving the Supreme Court its identity.

Varna Library

November 20, 2015May 22, 2022

Every book is a journey, each tells a story. The quest for knowledge always flows through no matter what time or age. We believe that libraries must evolve and continue to have a distinct role in the sharing of knowledge through the stories that this sharing entails. Experiences and stories will always remain precious and provide a web that connects society. These stories form the Varna Library. It disseminates and generates experiences and stories in addition to preserving and sheltering ideas. It is a series of variated experiences that bring people together, not

just with knowledge and learning but also into the act of sharing these learnings. This community of spaces form interrelated civic areas creating an assembly of the richness and breadth of Varna is history and culture. It is a concentration of public activity acting as a new type of urban knot that ties together the energy of active pursuits with the quiet contemplation of reading in a narrative that the people of Varna and its visitors will share and relate to.
