Sulong Maynila: Revitalizing Divisoria

December 6, 2019May 7, 2020

[lgc_column grid=”50″ tablet_grid=”50″ mobile_grid=”100″ last=”false”]What is your Divi story? Do you remember squeezing through the crowds for that bargain? Were you confused by the chaos and overwhelmed by the sheer number of shops? The dynamic density of Divisoria can best be felt on foot. The streets are the spine through which commerce and trade flow through. There is no shortage in activity and density at Divisoria – the iconic bargain shopping district of Manila made infamous by the petty crimes and grime due to its chaotic planning (or lack thereof). Revitalizing Divisoria reverses this infamy by compartmentalizing the density in such a way that it introduces order and sense of place through four landmark nodes – the Gateway, the Plaza, the Hawker Center and the Park. These nodes address the density issue by segmenting the kilometre-long district into more legible and digestible portions. Each node has a character and program of its own. It also features Lanterns – tall enough to be visible from afar – that are color coded to signal the dominant product group of each respective segment. The open spaces at the center of the Nodes provide reprieve and a safe-zone breathing space for the shoppers where security may also be strategically deployed. The revitalized Divisoria hopes to cultivate commerce and create more customers.[/lgc_column] [lgc_column grid=”50″ tablet_grid=”50″ mobile_grid=”100″ last=”true”][/lgc_column]

[lgc_column grid=”100″ tablet_grid=”100″ mobile_grid=”100″ last=”false”]The Gateway serves as the welcome node of Divisoria coming from Reina Regente Street and Abad Santos Avenue. The lanterns are in vibrant red to incite excitement and exude the shopping district’s vitality. A tourist Information marker is placed in this node containing vital information for visitors.[/lgc_column]
[lgc_column grid=”100″ tablet_grid=”100″ mobile_grid=”100″ last=”false”]The Plaza serves as the reprieve from the density of Tutuban Center and 999 Shopping Mall – two of the most dominant shopping centers along the Recto Avenue segment of Divisoria. Park benches, swings, and seesaw are introduced to give the visitors a lively and active plaza atmosphere.[/lgc_column]
[lgc_column grid=”100″ tablet_grid=”100″ mobile_grid=”100″ last=”false”]In contrast with the Plaza, The Park provides a quiet reprieve from the density and shopping activities of Divisoria. It introduces seating areas integrated with greeneries to promote a relaxing atmosphere at the end of the busy district.[/lgc_column]
